The Petaluma boys took the race out with the Campo boys in tow. Petaluma veteran Sterling Lockert set an aggressive pace. Setting a first mile slit of 4:58, Lockert ran the first half very aggressively, the good news for Petaluma is that his teammates feel like they can run with him. Petaluma dominated the race putting all 5 scoring runners in the top ten. Campolindo, meanwhile, finished second in a strong showing. Campo always comes on at the end of the season, however, so watch this match up to come! Steven Inglehart of the very small Branson School in the Marin area finished second individually and Robert Pulford of Campolindo finished 3rd. While Petaluma and Campo were way out in front in the point total, only 30 points separated 3rd and 6th showing the depth of this outstanding field.

The two mile course at Ed Sias is known for "Finale Hill" a steep, challenging 150m hill in the last 400m of the race. "Finale Hill," however is more the stuff of mythology, it is usually not the determining factor in the race. The course at Hidden Valley Park must be a committed effort from gun to finish. If you try to save yourself for "Finale Hill" you will be left behind. If you charge ahead to the front...and have the fitness level to maintain that aggressive rhythm, then you might just stand to win outright maybe even break a record!

In the Large School boys race, conditions were perfect and the competition was perfect...for a record-breaking race! The strong teams returning for the 2008 season: Monte Vista (who qualified for the CIF State Championships for the first time and De La Salle (one of the best top to bottom programs in the state) had a unique opportunity to go head to head. With regards to the individual field, it was anyone's guess as to who might win the day. That being said, it was a young man from Liberty High School who stole the show!

Wyatt Landrum, a senior from Liberty High School fearlessly took the pace out in this stacked field, while self admittedly not feeling well in the beginning of his race, Wyatt "sucked it up" rather well...well enough to set a course record! The old course record of 9:58 was set in 1989 nearly 20 years ago! To set a record on this challenging course this early in the season shows a preparedness coming into the season that should spell success for Wyatt all the way to Woodward Park in November. In the team finishes, Monte Vista took the race by storm overthrowing perennial powerhouse De La Salle.

St. Marys High SchoolOn the girls side, the Small School division was also chalk full of divisional rivalries with Campolindo, Maria Carillo, and Miramonte all ready to do battle again. Extremely strong smaller schools like St. Mary's of Berkeley and Mt. Shasta High School were also in the mix ready to make a significant showing. The rivalry between the three aforementioned schools goes back a long way. Campo and Miramonte have always jostled for the top spot in the North Coast Section Division 3 title, but a few years ago, the high-achieving program of Maria Carillo moved down from Division 2 to Division 3 and quite suddenly, the North Coast Section had the most competitive and dramatic battle in the sate of California! The Division 3 teams were going to be in for a ride, however as both St. Mary's and Mt. Shasta are ranked in the top ten in the state in their respective divisions.

Right out of the gate Taylor Lawson and Alex Choy (right) both of St. Mary's of Berkeley took command of the race. Pacing off of each other with a pack of several front-runners not far behind, they pushed the cadence throughout the first mile. The pack, however started to come on strong overtaking the pair of Panthers. Maria Carillo, lead by junior Lauren Curtain (below left) made a strong push, but the teammates of Lawson and Choy all finished in the top 15, giving St. Mary's the victory. Lauren Curtain of Maria Carillo won the race outright, powering up "Finale Hill" and finishing in a time of 12:03.0.
